SERVICE ABOVE SELF YOUTH VOLUNTEER AWARDS PROGRAM
The Service Above Self program was established in 1995 by the Rowan Rotary Club and Rowan County United Way to recognize young people in our county for their volunteer services to others. Each year, nominations are received from parents, school teachers and counselors, family members, volunteer organizations, and others recommending youth volunteers for recognition. An independent panel of judges reviews the nominations. Winners and finalists are announced and honored at an annual awards ceremony. Three individuals and three organizations are recognized in each of three divisions: elementary school level, middle school level, and high school level. Student winners in each division receive a medal and a savings bond: First Place $500, Second Place $200, and Third Place $100. Organizations with 501 (c) (3) tax exempt status are eligible for group awards with First Place receiving a $500 contribution and a plaque, Second Place a $100 contribution, and Third Place a $50 contribution. All nominees receive a framed certificate for their service. As many as 150 different individuals and groups are recognized each year for their outstanding volunteer services.
