Learn-to-Learn
Rowan Rotary Club provides area middle school and high school students a study skills course called “Learn-to-Learn.” Created over 38 years ago by Dr. P. R. Falkenberg at Wake Forest University, this course has taught participants basic learning skills that have helped to make their educational experiences as stimulating and as successful as possible.
Classes are held Monday through Friday for two weeks during the summer, and a refresher session is held in the fall after school begins. Each 2 ½ hour class is divided roughly in half, part lecture and part hands on practice. Each student practices the learned skill in a workshop setting so that they master it under expert supervision.
Study skills taught include Readrite, an effective method of learning from books; Co-Teaching, a method of learning by teaching others; Speed Reading, a sure technique to improve reading rate; Classroom Skills, a course on note taking, examination techniques and classroom procedures; Study Habits, an aide to help with concentration improvement, planning and efficient time use and development of strong study habits; and Computer and Internet skills, an emphasis on online learning.
